ASSORTED REMODEL PHOTOS, PAGE 2

When I saw this, I knew we had crossed the Point of No Return!

Material from the demolition of interior walls, heaped up in a pile in what was our living room.  Notice the insulation on the wall.  We had insulation but no vapor barrier.  That explains the mold invasion during winter!  The remodel provides for firring out to 2x6 studs with new insulation and vapor barrier.  We should be a lot warmer, and mold-free, come this winter.

Remember the previous photo looking from the backside of the lot?  Here is roughly the same view after the excavation for the new addition's foundation.

A side view of the excavation.

Before we got natural gas in Anchorage, homes were heated with oil.  Our 50-year old underground storage tank had to come up to make way for the new addition.  Thankfully it hadn't leaked.  The contractor found seven inches of old heating oil still inside the tank.  Upon disposal, he found the tank was not too far off from starting to leak.  This gives new meaning to the phrase, "Timing is everything!"
